Ultrasonographic findings of Ovarian Dermoid Cyst

Abstract
Because ultrasonography lacks ionizing radiation and its use may reveal unrelated pathology, it should be the initial diagnostic modality in the exa¡þmination of patients with suspected denmoid cysts of the ovary. The variety of internal contents of dermoid cyst presumably accounts for the spectrum of ultrasonographic findings encountered. Ultrasonograms of 35 patients with 36 surgically proved dermoid cysts of the ovary were reviewed to evaluate the ultrasonographic findings of this entity.
The results were as follows:
1. The prevalent age groups were 3rd and 4th decades(74 % ).
2. The masses ranged from 3 to 31cm with most measuring between 6 and 10cm in greatest diameter.
3. Of 35 cases, 13 were cystic. 17 were solid and 6 were mixed. In cystic type, 7 cases had echogenic nodules, 3 cases showed no internal echo, 2 cases had internal septations and 1 case showed mottled scattered internal echoes. In solid type, inhomogeneous echogenicity in 7 cases, diffuse hypoecho pattern with echogenic nodule in 5 cases, homogeneous echogenicity in 4 cases and central cystic component in 1 case were observed.
4. Echogenic nodules were observed in 13 cases, of which 7 were cystic type, 5 solid type and 1 mixed type.
5. Posterior acoustic shadowing were observed in 11 cases, of which 4 were cystic type, 6 solid type and 1 mixed type.
6. 18 cases (50%) had well marginated outlines and 10 cases (30%) had poorly marginated outlines.
7. One patient (3%) had bilateral ovarian dermoid cysts.
